Please Note

  • These are not instructions for how to clean Gravity & Momentum blood products out of clothes. Gravity & Momentum blood products do not stain and come out of clothes with just warm water. For instructions on how to clean up Gravity & Momentum blood products please see our how to page.
  • None of the methods in this article are guaranteed to completely remove fake blood stains. Corn syrup based fake blood is typically made with food dye, which can be incredibly difficult (if not impossible) to remove from clothing. The information in this article represents your best chances to remove as much of the stain as possible from your clothes.
  • If you happen to be working with detergent based fake blood, the stain should come out easily. However, please note that detergent based fake blood is toxic and not safe for your eyes, mouth, or extended exposure to your skin.
  • Please be careful when working with bleaches, detergents, and other chemicals. Always follow product instructions. Always protect your skin and eyes.
  • If possible, test removal approaches on a small portion of the fabric first (such as a shirt tail that will be tucked in) before applying to the entire garment.

And now, without further ado, tips on how to get fake blood out of clothes:

  • Make sure the garment is washable – If you’re wearing something that’s made of a delicate type of fabric (such as wool or silk) or marked as dry clean only, you’ll need to let a professional handle this. Otherwise you might damage the garment.
  • Time is of the essence – The longer you let a stain set in, the lower your chances of getting it out. Always attempt removal of the fake blood stain as quickly as possible.
  • Don’t put stained clothes in the dryer (or expose to other kinds of excess heat) – If you want to maintain your chances of getting the stain out, don’t put the garment in the dryer until you’ve either a) completely removed the stain or b) have given up on complete removal. Heat can set a stain in even more, making it that much more difficult, or even impossible, to get out later.
  • Soak with water immediately – Assuming the fake blood stain is on a washable garment, no matter where you are and even if you can’t take the garment off, soak the stained area with room-temperature water as soon as possible. Make sure the fabric is soaked all the way through. This will make your work later easier.
  • Try soaking the garment in color safe oxygen-based bleach (such as OxiClean) – Make sure to follow the product instructions. Skip this approach if the instructions indicate the product should not be used on your garment.
  • Try a detergent pre-treat – Again, assuming your garment is washable, take some of your laundry detergent (dish detergent is also an option) and put a bit of it on the stain. Rub gently to work the concentrated bit of detergent into the fabric, then let sit overnight before fully washing the garment.
  • Take the garment to a professional – Professional laundry services can be very helpful in removing stains. If you do take your garment to a professional, make sure to let them know what you’ve already tried.
  • Use chlorine bleach only as a last resort – Chlorine bleach can be useful on white clothes, but is very harsh and there is always a risk of damaging the garment.
  • Understand that not all stains will come out of all fabrics – You’ll never know whether a stain will come out completely until you try, and some stains simply won’t come out.
